Not Quite Bakerella…..Cake Balls

A few months ago I was baking up a storm for various holidays and functions. One recipe that I had seen that looked soooooo sinfully delcious was cake balls (or cake pops) from Bakerella. She made it look so easy so of course I had to try.

Well, I should have known. lol I’ve seen my fair share of projects gone wrong in the kitchen and this one is right up there! The instructions were great and they really were pretty simple but I don’t think they came out as good as bakerellas. What do you think?

Truth be told, I did dip mine in chocolate like she did but they got kind of crumbly. So, being the “Girl Lazy” I opted to drizzle chocolate on undipped balls. All in all, they did taste delicious. The girls loved them but until I master this recipe (and technique), I will keep them as an “at home” treat. lol

If you have never heard of Bakerella or been to her site, you are missing out. So many delicious treats and recipes. 🙂

They still look good enough to eat!!! I’ve made the same recipe, and also had a problem with the cake balls getting crumbly. When they started getting crumbly, I popped the cake mixture into the freezer for 5-10 minutes, and then started dipping into the “hot” melted chocolate. Messy business, but well worth it!

I love Bakerella! I’ve tried cake balls before too and mine didn’t turn out very well. I think they must take some practice to perfect!

  3. I think yours are just as pretty as BAkerellas!

  4. They still look cute and tasty! I have to say, this is the one reason I haven’t made them yet – everyone I know who’s tried them has had the same problem with them falling apart when it comes time to dip.

  5. Well, the bottom line is…once they’re in your mouth they get all chewed up anyway:) They look yummy!

  6. Yours looks great, I’ve been making cake balls with left over cake for about a year now and yep it just takes practice, and popping them into the freezer before dipping is a huge help! But like you said, at the end all that matters is taste and they are so yummy looking.

  7. They still look delicious! They all get turned into mush anyway 😉

  8. I made these before too, they were still delish but were FAR from perfect or pretty looking!

  9. I think yours are still pretty and look very yummy. Yours have a pretty accessory too! I’ve never made cake balls, but people always talk about how great they are. I guess I’m going to have to try one day…

  10. I love Bakerella, and her cake pops are always so cute! I’ve never tried to make them, though. I figured the chances of them turning out as pretty as hers are pretty slim.

  18. I’m a major novice on crafty baking, so thanks for switching me on to Bakerella. Holy mackerel does she make me want to get all the gear and start baking this second! Unlike other crafting, even the less than perfect can still be perfectly tasty too, but yours are still cute!

  19. I’ve made some not-quite-Bakerella cake balls before and mine looked 10 times worse than yours. But I didn’t care because they tasted heavenly – much like yours. Taste is all that matters, my friend!!!! (I actually think yours look really quite attractive!)

  20. I really enjoy making cake balls, but have not dipped them for a while for the following reason: My daughter needed a last minute snack to take to school for a party over the holidays. I had a batch of undipped cake balls in the fridge, and she grabbed those and ran out of the door before I could stop her. Long story short, that night two parents and a teacher contacted me for the recipe!! If I don’t have time to dip them, I put them in mini-muffin cups and pipe additional frosting on top. Put the minis in a cake pan, and you have a beautiful birthday (or other occasion) “cake”. Sorry to take up so much real estate here, but I didn’t want you to be disappointed because you couldn’t master the dipping technique!!

  21. I am so glad I’m not the only one that had issues making the Cake Balls, atleast yours turned out a WHOLE lot better than mine did 🙂 I only put chocolate on a few of them, and froze the rest to just snack on.

  22. They look yummy. Anything chocolatey and I am so there! Thanks for sharing at ‘Look at me, I’m SO Crafty!’ at Fun to Craft.
