Happy Spring everyone!  It’s Jenn from A Jennuine Life with this month’s Thrifty to Nifty project. I’m going to share an super quick project perfect for evenings on the front porch with friends or an afternoon BBQ.  This Necktie Wine Tote is made from two ties.  Three seams on your sewing machine and it’s done – how easy is that?  You could even hand sew this if you don’t have access to a machine.

My husband gave me a bag full of ties he was no longer wearing a couple of months ago.  Some had been handed down to him from his father and some were his.  There were some real gems in there, let me tell you!  I chose two ties which complemented each other and got to work:
What you’ll need:  two ties, a sewing machine and thread/thread and needle, pins, and a bottle of wine (yay!).

1.  Using your bottle as a guide to where to fold the ties, fold each tie in half with the front/right side together.

2.  Pin in place (I made sure to match the pattern on the one on the left) and sew pretty close to the edge.  I used contrasting thread to show the stitching, but you’ll want to use coordinating thread.

3.  Here’s the only tricky part:  Turn one of the ties right side out and slide it into the other tie with right sides facing.  Carefully pin making sure the fold at the bottom lines up.  Sew about 1/8″ from the edge.
4.  Turn the tote right side out and tie a knot in the tie ends to make a handle.

Whew!  That was all of ten minutes – now I’m off to enjoy some wine!

  3. Hi, I really love your necktie wine tote idea! I’m trying to make one for my flatmate. But unfortunately, I’m rather confused by your instructions. Is it possible to give more step by step instructions accompanied with pictures (including more of the finished product)? If you’re sewing the two ties parallel to each other, it doesn’t seem as if it’s wide enough fit a wine bottle. I’d really appreciate your help! God Bless!

  5. I feel like I’m missing something too?!
How is the bottom secured and why do you do seams on the side before sewing together?
    Step-by-step instructions would be great.

I know it’s been a while since you posted this, but I would love to have your help on this one.
I’m form the Netherlands and stumbled on this one on Pinterst.
My English is not that bad, but the discription of how to make this one is a little bit of abracadabra.
    I’ve tried it, but sorry…nope, didn’t succeed.
Now my question to you is: can you send me a discription plus more photo’s of how to make this one?
My sewingskills and termanology about sewing is like trying to walk for the first time, but I so much would love to give this one a try.
If anyone else reads this and would love to help me out, please send me a message via email.

  7. Question: on the finished wine tie tote, are the 2 wide sides of the tie sewn together & the 2 narrow sides sewn together OR narrow/wide.
