Step One: Grab your black paint and foam brush and a paint the insider perimeter of your wood slice, black.

Step Two: As paint is drying cut out your Tree and Reindeer cut files using your cutting machine. Note: You will need to measure the size of your wood slice and resize the SVGs down to the proper size before cutting.

TIP: Add a box around the design before cutting. This will make peeling the excess vinyl away from the design much easier. Working with a small area vs an entire sheet will save you some frustration.

Once your design is all cut out, you need to decided if you want to apply the actual vinyl design to the painted wood slice OR do you want to remove the design, use the vinyl as a stencil and paint instead.

As you can see from the photo above, I decided to use my vinyl as a stencil and paint so I’ll continue with those instructions.

Step Three: Take a piece of transfer tape (I used clear contact paper) and smooth on top of vinyl stencil. You’ll want to really rub that transfer tape on hard so that it sticks to the vinyl and picks it up from the carrier sheet.

Turn your stencil over face down and peel the the carrier sheet off of the vinyl. Now firmly press the stencil down onto the painted wood slice and remove the carrier sheet. Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles.

Step Four: To prevent the paint from bleeding through, put a coat of Mod Podge right over the vinyl. Be sure to get all the little small edges and details of the design. Once dry, paint. *Use a very, very light coat of paint for your first coat. Blot off any excess paint from the foam brush BEFORE painting.

Step Five: After the paint is dry, slowly peel back the vinyl. Finish your Rustic Wood Slice Ornament off with some buffalo check ribbon.

Although the method I showed you uses the vinyl as a stencil, you can use the actual vinyl design and it will come out fine. I tried it both ways and they both look great. It’s just a matter of preference. The photo below shows the vinyl design.

IMPORTANT: There’s one thing that I believe is worth mentioning just in case. If you decide to use your own wood slices cut down from a log or a branch you find at home, you will need to REALLY sand down the surface of the slice before you paint it black.

This is especially important if you intend to apply vinyl instead of paint.

I applied vinyl to my store bought wood slices and it held up nicely. I also applied vinyl to wood that I cut down on my own and it began to bubble and peel.
