Creative Canvas Wall Art

There was a large wall looming in my living room…I couldn’t figure it out…what to put there??

Do you have a wall like that? My living room is awkward, so small framed photos didn’t work. Then I purchased some 16×20 canvas photo prints…they looked odd too…and were expensive.

Trying to be creative and thrifty at the same time, I came up with this plan – I’d create my own canvas wall art that is cheap and easily changed with my whims (which I get a lot)! The papers I chose had browns in them, so I added some oranges and aquas to go with the theme of my decor and the fall season. If you tire of your color choices you can easily prime the canvases white again and choose another paper.

It’s easier than you might imagine and you can come up with your own method, of course. Plus you can embellish this simple technique if you like more bling (collage, glitter, paint, rub-ons etc).

You will need:
12×12 inch white canvases (I purchased mine on sale at Michael’s, 7 canvases for $15).
1 package of various scrapbook papers (also purchased a pack of 24 sheets on sale for $2.49)
HINT: pre-packaged paper does not have the bar code etc. printed on the back.

Choose some fun paper that you love and goes with your decor or seasonal theme
AND
You will also need Mod Podge, glue, paint brush and/or sponge, scissors

I created mine over a few days so I wouldn’t get burnt out on this job…I decided to place 9 canvases in a square on the wall. You can choose less or more, just work with the space you have.

Step 1: Have your canvas ready before you start. Take your first sheet of 12×12 paper and run it under  a gentle stream of hot water, back side first, then the front until it is thoroughly wet. Wetting the paper prior to laying it on the canvas stops it from wrinkling so much (I tried Mod Podging directly and the wrinkles ruined it). Be careful not to pull on the edge or rip the paper at this point. It does get delicate when wet. Fold the paper over your two forefingers so you can place the paper squarely on the canvas half at a time. It takes a bit of practice to get lined up, but after the third try you should have it!

Lift each corner to add the Mod Podge as you go so you don’t lose placement

Pour a blob and smooth with your fingers

Smooth the edge with your fingers, don’t Mod Podge the top yet!

Step 2: After you’ve place the paper squarely on your canvas, take your Mod Podge and pour a little bit at a time under one corner of the paper…spread with your fingers or brush until the entire canvas and underside of the paper has been Podged.
Check for air bubbles and press down the sides as best you can. We will work on the edges after this has dried.

Step 3: Some papers are not quite 12×12, so they will cover the edges. Some are thicker than others, which makes a difference in how the paper dries. Allow to dry for about an hour. Now you can trim your edge if you want to. On a few I folded with my finger nail and then glued down the edges, which is very time consuming. On the last ones I took my scissors and trimmed off the excess paper all round.

Step 4: Take your paint brush or sponge and Mod Podge the top of the paper. Seal the edges as you go. Press out any air bubbles you see as you go. HINT: I used Gloss Mod Podge, but suggest using Matte, so you don’t get the glare on your canvases when there is a direct light on in the room.

Canvases ready and waiting!

Step 5: Allow to dry for another hour or so. You may now add further embellishment, or ribbon edging if you like. I chose the simple approach (I mean, I’m covered in glue) so I’m now ready to hang my canvases.

Step 6: Measure out where you’d like your canvases to be on the wall. Hang with small nails, double sided tape, or Command strips (my fave!). I still have a lot of wall space left, so I might do three more canvases to create a rectangle on the wall! Those leftover empty canvases are calling to me!

Hope you have fun and enjoy. You might even think about letting the kids get in on this and do hand prints or drawings to hang in their rooms…or create holiday themed canvases that you can save from year to year.

Total Cost for Canvas Art – $20

Bucket Full of Kitchen Stuff {Secret Sister Gift}

I love giving and getting gifts that are handmade…..especially if it’s something that I can use and that’s my style. I tried to keep that in mind when making gifts for my secret sister this year. (For more info on the Secret Sister program that we do at church, click HERE). I will find out in a few days how I did when we do the big reveal at our women’s new year’s party. :)

I needed a gift for my S.S’s birthday and here’s what I came up with. I know she likes to cook and bake and she has a beautiful kitchen so I decided to put together a little bucket of things that I think she could use.

I started off with this:

  • An empty P90X Recovery Drink Container (If you work out and are looking for a good one, I know where you can get it. Pardon the shameless plug for my husband’s Beach Body business lol)
  • 1 Package of Floursack Dish Towels (It came with 4 and they are really big so I only used 2 and cut them in half to give me 4 normal sized dish towels)
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons because you can never have enough of these!
  • Clothes Pins, Flat Clear Glass Marbles, Magnets and Scrapbook paper (not shown. and please ignore the candles, I didn’t use them).
  • Supplies to embellish the container. I used just and ribbon.

I took the Floursacks and added a pretty fabric border to the bottom.

Then I took my container and with my hot glue gun I covered it in Jute and Ribbon. I also painted the top of it with craft paint (Americana Mud Slide I think??) and Mod Podged a circle made from scrapbook paper to it to dress it up a bit. I also took my measuring spoons and tied them around the top with ribbon.

I took some clothespins that I had laying around and covered them with scrapbook paper and Mod Podge. Once they were dry I took a nail file (yes, you read the correctly) and roughed the edges up a bit to make them look a little worn. I use these in my kitchen in place of snack back clips. They work just as good and are cheaper.

The last thing I did was took my flat glass marbles and Mod Podged scrapbook circles that I cut out with my Cricut (since Silhouette won’t send me one to review and giveaway….boo hooo!! lol) to the bottom of them. I used a 1 1/4″ circle and it worked out great. I took heavy duty round magnets and Gorilla Glued them to the bottom. Just a silly little note: the magnets were so strong that when I put them side by side to dry, they were drawn to each other and the magnets started sliding towards each other off the marble. lol That was fun!

Now here are just a few more pictures of everything all layed out.

I really hope she liked it. I know I definitely would have. :)

{newspaper heart blocks}

Hello everyone! It’s Kierste (sweetpea) from brown paper packages. I have been wanting to do a project with newspaper forever! I had some extra wood blocks laying around, and when I saw THIS post, it all came together. I love, love, love how they turned out!

ITEMS YOU NEED:

  • 2×6 board, cut into 5 1/2 inch squares (When you buy lumber, it’s always about 1/2 inch smaller than it says–so a 6 inch board is actually around 5 1/2 inches.)
  • Mod Podge and foam brush
  • cardstock
  • newspaper
  • scissors
  • paper trimmer
  • ribbon or other embellishment
  • Distress ink

DIRECTIONS:

  • Paint and distress wood blocks.
  • Router the edges if desired.
  • Cut cardstock to be just a little smaller than the edge of the routered edge.
  • Distress the edges.
  • Cut out heart from newspaper. I used a section from the classifieds/tv guide, where the print is small and more even. Distress edges.
  • Using double stick tape, adhere the heart to the cardstock.
  • Mod Podge the cardstock to the wood block, using even strokes. Let dry.
  • Add desired embellishment.

Have a great week!

Easy Chipboard Books Kids Can Make

You seriously would not believe what went on in my house this weekend with my “adventurous” daughters. I mean seriously. They out-did themselves. Let’s just put it this way: they are lucky they are alive and I don’t mean from the severe punishment that they received for their dangerous antics! They are only 6 and 3 but it was bad. They were sentenced to their room last night (only allowed out for dinner) and had the tv taken away from them last night and today. So, what’s a mom to do with 2 crazies on a weekend with no place to go and no TV to watch? Craft!

When me and the Mr. got married we moved over 2 hours away from my family and over 3 hours away from his. While we love living where we are it does kind of stink being away from family during the holidays especially now that we have kids. Today I decided that we needed to make Grandpa (my father-in-law) a little gift to send to him for Valentine’s Day. He lost my mother-in-law almost 4 years ago (the day after V-day actually) so I like to send a little something to hopefully brighten his day, even for a few seconds.

Emilee had gotten a scrapbook kit for Christmas (or as she kept calling it, her first aid kit) and had been begging me to take it out. I thought today was a good time for it. So, with her kit, some chipboard books that I had on hand (originally purchased at Michael’s for a buck I think?), some Mod Podge, my Cricut and some photos printed out, we managed to come up with this:

I didn’t take pictures of the progress but it was pretty simple:

  1. I let the girls pick out 2 different patterns of paper and then glue them each to a chipboard page.
  2. I used an exacto knife and cut the excess paper off.
  3. I then picked out coordinating paper and attached it to the other side of their pages.
  4. I printed out 4 pictures from the computer, cut them down to size and gave each of them 2.
  5. Using a glue stick, they glued their pictures to their pages and decorated with stickers.
  6. On the pages that did not have pictures I cut out some phrases and sayings using my Cricut and decorated those.
  7. Once we were done, I took my distress ink and distressed all the pages.

That was it. The cover of the book reads (as you can see) Just Because We Love You and the last page of the book says Love, Emilee and Grace. It kept both girls very busy and they were very excited to be making a little Valentine’s gift for Grandpa.

{Snowflake Ornament – Epsom Salt Style}

If it weren’t for the fact that I had to prepare a craft for my mid-week “Sunday School” class I may never have gotten this done. I’m busy preparing for my party tomorrow night.

Red Velvet Cupcakes? Check!
Chocolate Chip Cookies? Check!
Chocolate Chip & Walnut Cookies? Check!
M&M and Oatmeal Cookies? Check!
Red Velvet Triffle? Check!
Chewy Caramel Bars? Check! (Will be posting recipe during our Creating Christmas Blog Fest).

Whew!! Oh and score a 4.2 lb weight loss this week! I’m on a roll!

Anyhow, ever since I discovered the marriage of Epsom Salt and Mod Podge, I’ve been going a little bit nuts! I first did the candle shown in THIS post which came out pretty good. Then I found these unfinished wooden snowflake ornaments in Hobby Lobby for $0.50 each (they were half off!) and thought that they needed a little frosting.

First, I spray painted them sterling silver.

Then I covered the front with Mod Podge and placed the snowflake glue side down into a plate of Epsom Salt and got this.

Hind sight is always 20/20 and I think next time I may paint the snowflakes gold instead. But for now, not too shabby for under a buck!

We’re linking up with Somewhat Simple and The Inspired Room. :)
