DIY Key Wristlet with Michaels Fabric

A few weeks ago I gave you the exciting news that Michaels now sells pre-cut fabric. Their  pre-cut fabric line  includes cotton, canvas, burlap, felt, faux fur, crushed velvet and tulle, and will be available in a variety of sizes from a half-yard to 2 yards. A few perks of selling pre-cut fabric is you can find everything you need for your projects in one place AND since it’s all pre-cut and measured there’s no waiting for measuring and cutting. Score! Today I get to share with you a cute and extremely simple project I made using their pre-cut zebra-striped fabric. In case you didn’t know, zebra stripes are totally in! They are on car seat covers, clothes, sheets, flip flops…you name it. And now they are on these fun and super easy DIY Key Wristlets.

Key Fob Wristlet

This is a super easy project that anyone can make. I had some sewing machine issues so it took me a little longer but you can totally bang out a bunch in a short period of time.

The Supplies:

Pre-cut Zebra Stripe Fabric from Michaels

Sewing Machine

Pliers

Medium to Heavy Cotton Webbing*

Key Fob Hardware*

*You can find these supplies by searching on Esty. I had mine on hand already.

Michaels Precut Fabric

Step One: Cut your cotton webbing down to the size you want. Mine was purchased pre-cut but you can just measure around your own wrist loosely and add about 2 inches.

Step Two: Cut fabric in strips the same length as your webbing and about an inch wider. Cut as many strips as you need for the number of key wristlets you want to make.

Step Three: Lay fabric strip right side down, fold one edge lengthwise over about 1/2 inch and iron flat. Do the same with the other edge so that your fabric is now a bit thinner than the webbing and you have smooth edges.

Step Four: Center your fabric strips on top of your cotton webbing and sew along the edges lengthwise to secure your fabric to your webbing.

Step Five: Fold your sewn piece in half and place the key fob hardware right over the end of your fabric and webbing.

Step Six: One you have it in place you will take a scrap piece of fabric and cover the hardware. Then grab your pliers and pinch the end of the hardware so that it closes down on top of the fabric. Do the same to both sides.

You want to use the fabric to keep the hardware from denting and getting damaged.

Step Seven: Slip a key ring right onto the hardware and your project is now complete.

Key Wristlet

This makes a wonderful teacher or neighbor gift. I even made a bunch and gave them as Christmas gifts one year and they were a big hit! Next time you’re shopping at Michaels you need to take a look for yourself at the different sizes and fabrics they carry. As you know Michaels is chock full of craft supplies. I can spend hours in that place. Here’s some inspiration to help inspire your creativity

Now get up and head to Michaels!

*Disclaimer: I was compensated with fabric and a gift card to Michaels for this post but the thoughts and ideas are entirely my own.
